Big Thunder Mountain's Makeover: Why the Delays Might Be Worth the Wait
Disney fans, brace yourselves! The iconic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom is undergoing a transformation that's sparking both excitement and impatience. While construction walls have expanded, seemingly swallowing up even the beloved popcorn kiosk, there's a buzz in the air as testing continues on this beloved roller coaster. But here's where it gets controversial: are these delays a sign of trouble, or a promise of something truly spectacular?
Our team recently spotted an intriguing sight: trains chugging along the tracks of the currently closed attraction. This isn't the first time we've seen movement; trains have been testing for months, hinting at progress behind the walls. Compare the photos from December 2025 to today, January 9th, and you'll notice the construction zone has grown significantly, now stretching almost to the Frontierland Station. Remember when the Walt Disney World Railroad switched to shuttle mode last July? It seems the entire area is undergoing a major facelift.
And this is the part most people miss: A significant amount of scaffolding was removed late last year, suggesting the construction crew might soon shift their focus to the guest-accessible areas of the mountain. Beyond the walls, glimpses of the future Piston Peak are emerging. A temporary wooden structure has been replaced by concrete pouring, hinting at substantial changes to the landscape. Even from the vantage point of Tiana's Bayou Adventure, you can see a dirt path with tracks, potentially a staging area for more concrete work.
The former popcorn cart location appears to be history, and the exit area is a bustling hub of activity with dirt piles and workers, possibly preparing for further construction. While Big Thunder Mountain received new tracks early in the refurbishment, the ongoing work outside suggests the ride itself might be nearing completion, though the entrance and guest-facing areas still need attention.
Disney has promised a reimagined Big Thunder Mountain with new bells and whistles, including an updated opening scene and a transformed Rainbow Caverns. While specifics on additional new scenes remain under wraps, the anticipation is palpable. Will the wait be worth it? Will the new additions live up to the hype?
