A New Chapter for Sal Stewart: Overcoming Past Mistakes and Embracing a Brighter Future
In the world of Major League Baseball, a young talent named Sal Stewart is ready to leave his mark. But here's where it gets controversial: Stewart's journey hasn't been without its challenges.
During the 2025 National League Wild Card Series, a crucial error at first base haunted Stewart throughout the offseason. It was a moment that could have defined his career, but Stewart is determined to prove his worth.
"I'm eager to get back on the field and showcase my defensive skills. Everyone assumes I'm weak in that area, but my Minor League stats tell a different story. The numbers don't lie, and I'm ready to let my actions speak for themselves," Stewart shared with confidence.
The path to the big leagues wasn't easy for Stewart. Just before his promotion, he found himself in an unfamiliar position, learning on the job. Manager Terry Francona acknowledged the unfairness of the situation, stating, "We knew it, and so did he. It was a big ask, but he handled it well, and I have no doubts he'll thrive."
General Manager Brad Meador echoed similar sentiments, attributing Stewart's rapid rise through the ranks as the reason for the lack of first base experience. "We've worked hard to avoid such situations by playing our prospects in multiple positions in the Minor Leagues. In Stewart's case, we couldn't provide the necessary reps, but we're confident in his abilities."
As the 2026 season approaches, Stewart, still classified as a rookie, is ranked as the Reds' top prospect and the 22nd overall by MLB Pipeline. His September call-up was a glimpse into his potential, slashing impressive numbers. To build on this success, Stewart must secure the first base position, a role previously held by Spencer Steer, who is now slated for left field.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity, and I trust Tito's plan. My job is to give it my all, and I believe in my abilities," Stewart expressed.
And this is the part most people miss: Stewart's dedication extends beyond his talent. He won the "best shape of his life" contest in December, shedding an impressive 26 pounds. His uniform now hangs loosely, a testament to his commitment.
"I aimed for this weight, and I'm maintaining it. I was initially concerned about my power, but I've proven to myself that my swing remains compact, and the power is still there," Stewart assured.
Assistant bench coach Mike Napoli, who works closely with the first basemen, has already reported improvements in Stewart's athleticism due to his slimmer physique. Francona added, "Our goal was to see him move with agility, and that's exactly what we've achieved."
The signing of Eugenio Suárez adds an interesting dynamic. Suárez will rotate between designated hitter, first base, and third base, positions that Stewart also excels in. This move takes some pressure off Stewart, allowing him to focus on his strengths.
"Suárez's addition could work both ways. What does Stewart bring to the table for Suárez? He's a talented hitter with a bright future. We're excited to see how he contributes to our wins," Francona noted.
Stewart believes his offseason dedication will pay off in his first full Major League season. "I know I belong at this level, and I'm ready to trust in my abilities. As long as I maintain that mindset, I'm thrilled for the upcoming season."
