The Boston Celtics are on a roll this season, but could they be even better? Despite stellar performances from players like Jaylen Brown and promising contributions from young talents, the Celtics might be missing a crucial piece for a deep postseason run: a dominant presence in the frontcourt. With only two players taller than 6'9" on their roster (excluding two-way rookie Amari Williams), the team could significantly benefit from a proven, experienced big man to complement their existing talent. But here's where it gets interesting: Could Ivica Zubac of the Los Angeles Clippers be the perfect fit?
Celtics Insider Chris Forsberg certainly thinks so, as discussed on the Celtics Talk Podcast. Forsberg believes Zubac could be an ideal trade target, citing his desirable contract and impressive skillset.
Zubac's stats speak for themselves. Last season, he achieved career highs in points (16.8) and rebounds (12.6), even finishing sixth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Although he's currently dealing with an ankle injury, his double-double averages this season (14.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game) demonstrate his consistent impact. His contract is also a major draw: he's in the first year of a three-year, $58.7 million deal, averaging $19.5 million per season through the 2027-28 season.
But here's the catch: Acquiring Zubac won't be easy. The Clippers have turned things around and are vying for a playoff spot, making them less likely to sell. If they do consider a trade, the asking price would likely be high, potentially including at least two first-round picks. Forsberg emphasizes Zubac's potential to be a plug-and-play solution, perfectly complementing the Celtics' existing roster. He highlights Zubac's ability to immediately address the team's biggest need. Zubac's $18 million salary this season also offers financial flexibility, potentially allowing the Celtics to manage their budget and plan for future moves.
And this is the part most people miss: Forsberg believes Zubac's addition could help the Celtics in the long run, even allowing them to potentially reset penalties and make bigger moves down the road.
What do you think? Would Zubac be a worthwhile investment for the Celtics? Do you agree with Forsberg's assessment, or do you see other potential trade targets that would be a better fit? Share your thoughts in the comments!
